My Tutoring Philosophy – Heather Egan
Many students struggle in certain courses in school. I believe that it is often a lack of confidence which is at the root of their struggles. Initial confusion about a concept, if the confusion isn’t cleared up, can grow and create a sense of misunderstanding and persistent confusion. If the misunderstandings continue to build, then a student ultimately loses confidence in themselves.
It is my goal, with each of my students, to encourage a growth in self-confidence. In a non-judgmental atmosphere, with lots of laughs interspersed, and plenty of tea consumed (!), students can fill in the gaps in their understanding of material, and they can learn to enjoy the learning process again. I have repeatedly witnessed the positive effects of increased confidence on a student’s understanding, self-esteem, and sense of worth. Usually, a renewed confidence translates to an eagerness to learn and a source of intrinsic motivation, which both take a student a long way in life!

We all learn in different ways and exhibit different types of intelligence. Therefore, not every student will respond to a single method of delivery; some students are visual learners, some are auditory, and others are kinesthetic learners. I believe that with patience and thought a program can be developed to assist any student in meeting their learning goals. This is my aim – to work with each student to determine how they best learn and to create inspiring and helpful lessons for them.
It is my belief that if a child has a personal connection with the material, they will be motivated to learn it and will have fun doing so. I endeavour to create those connections for kids.
I am possessed of a gentle demeanor and I have patience and perseverance. I enjoy children (young and older). I establish a connection with each of my students and these connections are extremely important to me. It is my aim to make each person with whom I work feel special. I hope that they each pick up on the fact that I feel privileged to work with them and that I support their goals completely.
Why choose tutoring?
Tutoring can be used to help a child or an adult who has learning challenges; it can be used to encourage an intrinsic desire to learn in a student experiencing a lack of motivation; or it can help a student who struggles with specific concepts in a given course. Tutoring can also help to prepare a student for an exam over a specific (short) time period. The wonderful thing about tutoring is that it is usually one-on-one and can therefore be tailored specifically to suit any student’s needs.
